Peace advocate started in her teens

Big Jammin'

With more than 10 years of peace advocacy behind her, a 29-year-old Disciple is offering her experience to help other would-be peace advocates.

Amy Gopp, Washington, D.C., is the new intern coordinator of the Disciples Peace Fellowship peace intern program. The program sends Disciples young adults to camps and conferences, and other Disciples gatherings, to share workshops, seminars and other activities on peace making.

Amy is familiar to Disciples youth already: She addressed the 1999 ICYF event in Ft. Worth, Texas. She's also written stories for The Disciple magazine, some of which were written while she served as a missionary in the region around Bosnia. (In fact, you can read one right now: So you think you want to be a missionary?)

She also as been a DPF peace intern herself.

"Her enthusiasm and energy will build on the solid foundation established by past coordinators."

"Amy brings a unique global perspective to this most important DPF ministry, along with her personal experience as a summer intern," said Joel Heim, Oconomowoc, Wis., moderator of the DPF executive committee. "Her enthusiasm and energy will build on the solid foundation established by past coordinators."

Besides all that, she's served as assistant director of the Lion and the Lamb Peace Arts Center, Bluffton (Ohio) College. Pretty impressive. Amy has even more credentials for her work: She holds a master of arts degree in conflict resolution from Antioch University, Yellow Springs, Ohio, and a bachelor of arts degree in international relations from the American University School of International Service in Washington, D.C.

Besides leading the DPF peace intern program, she currently serves as graduate academic adviser at American University and attends National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.

But it's good to remember that Amy started out in Kent, Ohio, active at First Christian Church and the regional camp program. Today she is an adult member of the General Youth Council of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), trying to give back a little bit of that leadership training she received growing up.

If you want to know what makes Amy tick, write to her at amygopp@hotmail.com. Ask her about "Torba," a drama, inspired by her experiences in Croatia and Bosnia. Or ask how you can prepare yourself for DPF internships.
