ADIOM Gathers for First Time in 15 Years (Association of Disciples In Outdoor Ministries)

by Deana Perdue

Thirty-one representatives of 20 camps and/or conference centers, one camp-to-be, and three general units gathered at Central Oklahoma
Christian Camp in Guthrie, Oklahoma on January 8-10. Ministers and lay people responsible for all aspects of outdoor ministries were
present: site managers, administrators, program directors, regional staff for camp and conference programs, as well as some planning a new campground.

The group celebrated personal stories of significant moments in
outdoor ministries. Gary Weeks, who convened the conference, led a walking tour of Central Oklahoma Christian Camp. Significant issues were identified and discussed: strategic planning, program and site development, the role of outdoor ministries in developing ministerial leadership for the church, funding for operation and capital, risk management, curriculum, and staffing. Visual tours of other campgrounds were provided through videos, brochures, photo displays,
and verbal descriptions.

Though each outdoor ministries setting provides varying programs and faces some unique challenges, those present affirmed the common thread that outdoor ministries provide vital ministries for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), ministries which change lives. Affirming that everyone could benefit from the networking and collegial support made possible through this Association, an ADIOM Web site was created to maintain and strengthen ties until the group gathers again January 7-9, 2002 at Loch Leven Conference Center in
California.

GARY WEEKS, administrator of Central Oklahoma Christian Camp, leads discussion at ADIOM gathering.
